But before we get into the project…first things first!!

There’s this spunky, crazy awesome gal I know named Jen Marrs and her BIRTHDAY is today (woohooo!) so I wanted to make her something extra special, just like her!  Have you ever met anyone who is just so awesome-sauce, rockstar cool – someone that makes you laugh and you just want to be their best friend??  Me too and I married him. ;)  But my fabulous {{BIRTHDAY GIRL}} Jen is truly just that as well.  Just a few “faces of Jen”….

Yeah, she is just full on CRAZY fun!  If you haven’t checked out her blog over at Four Marrs, One Venus you must do so immediately.  No, really.  I’ll wait here, no problem.  Jen and her Hubs have three boys (like us!) –  isn’t her blog name just the best??

So I wanted to make a little birthday gift for “Venus”.  Well, I actually really wanted to try and make a dance video for her since she LOVES to dance, but that might have entailed washing my hair and being on camera and nobody really needs to see that.  Really.  Sooo I made this instead.

A fun “DIY Monogram Washi-Tape Wall Art” project (that is currently en route from me in Sunny Florida to the birthday girl in Sunny California!  Come on USPS, don’t let me down)!

Here’s how I made it.  First, I found this fun 3-D letter “M” at JoAnn.

I wasn’t sure whether to use acrylic paint but in the end I decided to spray paint it.

As it turns out, spray paint does crazy things on cardboard so I had to wipe some of it off.

And I ended up really liking the distressed look!  Kind of funky, just like Jen!

After the paint was dry I used some fun Washi Tape for the stripes.  I heart Washi Tape.

Next I took a picture frame and cut some cute coordinating scrapbook paper to fit inside the frame.

I then glued the letter to the glass.  I was originally NOT going to even use the glass but the backing wasn’t cooperating and seemed wobbly so I changed plans.  And I wasn’t sure what would best adhere a painted cardboard letter to glass and I can now tell you that Gorilla Glue does NOT work.  So I ended up using hot glue.

(Disclaimer: This is the part where I should tell you that I normally craft for personal consumption and if something falls off of a wall I generally just step over it or stick it back on with some more glue.  Or gum.  Or whatever is closest.  But Jen is super crafty – my gosh the girl re-finished her own counter top to look like granite, for Pete’s sake – so I know that if the letter DOES happen to come off in shipping, she’ll know just what to do.  She’s smart like that.  I sure hope it doesn’t come off, though.)

Then I added some more washi tape to the frame for fun.  I like the “lemony-lime” feel of the green and yellow.  All citrusy and fun, like Jen.  And I also like making up words like “lemony” and “citrusy”.  And, since it’s in a frame, you can actually just stand it up OR hang it.  Boom!

I think it turned out really cute!  Since Ms. Marrs  and I have the same last initial I was a little tempted to keep this for myself!.  ;)

So a last big, fat, gushy, smooch filled

  11. Very cute! Great colors for spring :)

  12. I love this idea! Where do you buy your Washi tape?

    • Hi Jeni! So glad you stopped by. I get my Washi tape from either A) or (more often) B) If you aren’t familiar with it yet, Pick Your Plum is a daily deals site (based on the premise of “when it’s gone, it’s gone”) and about every 5-6 weeks they do a Washi sale. Amazing prices. Great company. The Washi sells out FAST so I eyeball their email every AM to see if there’s Washi. A little addiction. ;)
      Have a great weekend! :)

  13. Cute project, Claire! Thanks so much for sharing at last week’s Marvelous Mondays party. Pinned to my Marvelous Mondays board!
