Hi there, everyone! I’m Amy, from Ms. Toody Goo Shoes, and I’ve got an easy centerpiece idea that brings the beach to you, just in case a trip to the shore isn’t on your summer agenda.
Probably the best thing about living in the NY/NJ area, is that we have our choice of many beaches within a reasonable driving distance. From Cape May to Montauk, there must be a hundred beaches in between. When I was younger, we didn’t think twice about heading “down the shore” (that’s Jersey-speak for “to the beach”) for the day.
Now, with a family, a dog, and life in general, spontaneity has gone out the window. Unless it’s something that’s been scribbled on the calendar for awhile, we don’t get to the beach nearly as often as I’d like to.
To keep my connection to the ocean, I try to surround myself with beachy things. At home in the suburbs, where the only body of water in sight is the bird bath, I need just a few props to set the mood.
To make this beach-themed centerpiece, I used items I had around the house. However, most things can be bought in a craft store. Of course, you don’t need to use the exact same things I used.
Shop your house and gather anything and everything that you have that is beach-related, and from there, you can play around with different pieces to determine what to use. Go ahead…I’ll wait.
Just like any other vignette, you’ll want to follow certain guidelines. I started with my trusty silver tray, and filled it with sand that I had gotten at the craft store.
To add height, I used a lantern, surrounding the candle with sea glass that I’ve collected over the years.
To balance the other side, I placed a huge conch shell that I actually found on a beach in Turks and Caicos many years ago. It took up half my suitcase, but there was no way I was leaving that on the beach!
Filling in the center is a mason jar candle, and another large shell, that, believe it or not, I also found on Turks some 25 years after I found the first one. I guess it’s a “shore thing” that you’ll find giant shells on Turks and Caicos! That, my friends, is my sorry attempt at some beach humor.
To finish it off, I added a couple of starfish, and scattered some small shells and pieces of sea glass in the sand. Just like a real beach, right?
A few more pieces complete my little beach oasis tablescape…a lighthouse that used to be in my son’s bedroom, shell dishes that were my mother-in-law’s, starfish and sand dollars, and a lobster pillow.
The nice thing about my beach is that it’s portable. When I’m through with it outside, I bring it indoors to use as centerpiece on my buffet.
So,even if I’m land-locked, without a wave in sight, I can put on my
bathing suit, play some Beach Boys music, and imbibe in some of those cute umbrella drinks.
And I just might stick my toes into the sand on that platter.
