There’s a struggle inside me… between the dark side and the light. No, I’m not speaking of science fiction clichés of which by now we’re all undoubtedly tired. I’m talking about the struggle with my skepticism of “one pot” anything on one side, and my inherent dislike of doing dishes on the other.
With our crazy after-school schedule there’s something to be said for a meal that can be prepared in very little time with a minimal amount of cleanup, but finding a one-pot meal that actually tastes good can sometimes be elusive.
I recently saw these Tyson® Meal Kits in the “Ready to Cook” section of the fresh meat department at Publix (currently with a very handy $2/off coupon) and decided to give the Beef Marinara skillet a try.
They also have Chicken Carbonara, Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo, and Beef & Cheddar Melt varieties and I thought the Beef Marinara would be the safest bet with the kids (and I turned out to be right… more on that in a few).
I like that the meals come in a very handy kit form and include everything you need to make a family meal. The Beef Marinara skillet kit has 12 ounces of fresh, lean ground beef – more than enough for a family with a couple of hungry kids.
The kit also comes with a pouch full of marinara sauce, and two packs of pre-cooked pasta.
Preparation is super easy and is finished well within the 15 minutes promised on the package.
Simply brown the ground beef and drain, add the pasta and marinara sauce, stir until heated through and serve!
The end result was really very good! I was especially impressed with the consistency of the pasta. I have found that one-pot pastas are really difficult to get right – seems like you end up with pasta that’s either too chewy, or it becomes mushy. Not so, in this case. It was just right. I sprinkled a little Italian five cheese blend on top.
Most importantly, the kids loved it! Littlest had a bowl of his own, and when Middlest got his hands on some he asked for seconds – then asked for leftovers later! From what he tells me, it reheats really well.
I wouldn’t know because it’s gone!
Oh well, at least there’s only one pan to wash…
